4Very Basic Features; Quality Item
By C. Arnold
(I have owned and used both the Plantronics voyager and voyager pro units.)I have had this unit of over a month at this writing. This is a bare bones unit that works very well and is relatively comfortable to ware. The main button turns it on/off and answer/hang up; no auto answer. Extremely light, the battery on standby lasts a long time. So far I have documented 16 hours in standby then I lose track or get multiple calls and eat up the battery. In the basic mode they say 9 days of standby. It gives an audible tone of two beeps that goes down the note scale when it is low on power as a warning. You can check the unit when it is turned on by briefly touching the main power button; if the LED flashes red and/or you get the audible tone you have less than a half hour of standby time. The unit flashes a green LED and a two note rising tone if greater than 30 minutes of standby time. The manual is extremely through and fairly well written. The unit comes with a USB/110 volt combination charger, three in the ear and one over the ear mountings. A full charge takes 2.5 hours. The side button turns on/off the "Pass Through" feature when you are not talking on the phone; they call it Environmental Mode (more below). When you are talking on the phone the side button adjusts the sound level (normal/med/high with noise cancelling or no noise cancelling normal level); this only adjusts while you are in a phone conversation. The side button is easily accessible when it is in the left ear and not so easy in the right ear for me (on my right ear my ear lobe is partially in the way but can be reached). Your hands develop a feel for the unit. They say that some phones volume buttons will adjust the volume. I have a Sony Ericson 518a, it does not do this...I find the in the ear system fairly comfortable and delivers very good sound quality to both my ear and the person listening as long as the unit is very close or line of sight of about 15 feet of the phone. Your body easily blocks the bluetooth signal. When first using the inner ear system the holding loops seem a bit stiff but they loosen up. At first I used the smallest loop now I use the medium (my ear must have developed a tolerance). Gum chewers beware it will most likely work itself out of the ear, I do not think it would be good for exercising but I do you it while on walks. For $65 you can have a custom ear mold made somewhere (hopefully) nearby you. The change between left or right ear is very simple as the ear piece essentially slides on the mount. This is also sort of a problem as you sometimes aren't sure it is in your ear correctly as the main body easily rotates and the loop may not move into the part of the ear it needs to go to hold it securely. When it is in properly I notice it touching my jaw more than being in my ear. I find myself changing between ears at about one and a half hours which is far longer than I could stand using the Plantronics voyager and about the same as the voyager pro.The headset has other features that are activated through button touches; Mute (touch both buttons briefly during a call), answer call waiting (touch main button while in a call and the new call comes in), swap calls (hold both buttons for two seconds or the main button twice quickly), redial (press main button twice quickly), refresh bluetooth connection (press main button briefly when back in range, it usually re-connects on its own), voice dialing (hold both buttons for one second), and reject call (hold both buttons for two seconds while a call is coming in). If you can remember all of that your better than me. I can use all these features except for voice dialing which I do not have set up on my phone so I cannot test it.It has one unique feature of being able to pass the sound that is outside your ear through the unit to inside the ear when you are waiting for a call. The "pass through" feature basically acts like a hearing aid though you cannot adjust the volume. Pressing the side button for two seconds turns on (two beeps) and off (one beep) the pass through feature. There is a slight hiss you can hear when this is turned on (if your hearing is good). This can also result in some feedback for various reasons; sometimes your own voice. It is a little strange at first especially to hear your voice amplified. In my case my right ear has some slight hearing loss. I have never heard well in noisy crowds and having it in while I am in noisy areas with the pass through on enhances my ability to hear; basically what they are advertising the feature does. I cannot find any way to adjust the volume on this feature. The battery lasts a about 7 hours in this mode with no calls. There is a secondary unit that you can buy that acts as a remote microphone and is linked to headset via bluetooth. They suggest you place it near a TV set or on the person you want to hear. I have not seen this device in operation.I am seriously considering getting a custom ear mold for my right ear. I think this could fulfill all my needs and be extremely comfortable.4/8/11 update - dropped it and it would not charge, sent it to company and they fixed it and returned unit. Works fine again, 6 day turnaround.7/28/11 update - recently ordered a new one, after breaking my old one,at cheap price it was packaged in a T-Mobile blister and works just fine.

4Good performer

I'm a fan of this unit. It replaced a lost Jawbone and was a giant improvement. The people I call are happy with the sound quality and I can always hear them clearly. Wind noise doesn't impact the mic nearly as much as it did the Jawbone. The Sound ID 400 earpiece happens to fit my ear. It's GREAT not to have that silly hanger that comes with the Jawbone. The charger has a detachable head so you can use a wall outlet or the USB to your computer. What could be be improved?- The ear piece rubber "ring" wears out easily. The lifespan of that piece is days not months. That said, the unit fits fine without it.- The battery life seems brief. The tritone warning signal sounds several times, minutes apart, before running out of power - so one is well prepared. In most cases the call is not dropped. It's a little black object and it can be misplaced. I've had that concern more than once. In each instance, the thought of a replacement goes right back to the Sound ID 400. I would be impressed also with whatever upgrade models are now in place (Sound ID 510).

1Well that was a waste of $20....

I purchased this based solely on the other reviews here. I plugged it in and called a business that uses voice recognition and it didn't work (which was my first clue I was screwed). Then I called a friend who said she couldn't understand a word I was saying because of the background noise. Then I put it in my glovebox and haven't used it since.Don't waste your money....
