By Tim Kimzey
***PLEASE SKIP TO BOTTOM TO READ THE AMMENDED COMMENTS!***Original Review:This new Sony Smart Wireless Headset Pro is exactly what i have been wanting for several years now. A few years back, i bought the SonyEricson MW600, which at the time was the closest to my desired stereo bluetooth headset as possible. It worked rather well overall, except for the horrid touch volume slider. The sound was decent, not particularly awesome, but good enough for BT audio. The included earbuds were OK, but i opted to plug in my higher-quality ones and never used the included ones after the trial. But like with many users the clip kept falling out and finally it broke entirely, making the function of the device basically worthless without the clip-on feature. Sony wouldn't help me when i contacted them about it either. So with trepidation, i decided to give this new one a try. And I am happy to say, so far, its working quite well. The built-in MP3 player with on-board MicroSD card is a great feature, it will come in very handy to use as a small music player when i don't want to tether the phone (to make it bearable to mow my lawn for instance). The player is basic but works well. I uploaded thousands of songs on a 32gb card and plugged it in. It will display the artist/song title as its playing. The card slot is located under a slide-off cap on the end. The USB charging port is located under the cap as well. The box includes a 2gb card, a very short USB cable, and a power adapter to usb. I was accidentally sent the European one, but my vendor (ExpansesUSA) promptly replied to my email and shipped out a US power adapter the same day. Great customer service. There is also a very nice MicroSD Card reader USB adapter. It works well to load up your music from the computer onto the tiny card. This headset has a lot of good accessories, which all work very well and seem to add to the satisfaction for what you are shelling out for this package. In the menu (button on far left) you can toggle btween SD card, Phone, Radio, and set-up tools. There is a three-way button to the right of the menu button with Back/Play-Pause/Forward which seems intuitive enough and has a good click response. On the the bottom is the Up/Down Volume buttons, with good tactile feel as well. And thanks Sony for not using the horribly engineered slider volume again. This one works great! The phone answer/call is bigger round button on the top beside the LCD screen. The power button is a small button on the top near the headphone jack. The microphone is on the top panel too. Everything is laid out well ergonomically, and functions well too.The Bluetooth seems to have pretty good range, and the sound is about the best i've used so far. Fairly clean and free of radio-distortions and such. You HAVE to download and intall the Sony LiveWare APPS from GooglePlay to use the device with your android phone. My SamsungGalaxyNexus installed the apps well and locked onto the device without any problems. You have to confirm the passcodes and such. You can use two devices to bluetooth to the SWHP. It will show a number (1 or 2) on the display to show which one is synced. Mine also knows and displays my phone brand.Using a music player app (my favorite is PowerAmp) the sound is actually very good, better than i expected to be honest, and i am admittedly one of those audiophile types who is a bit picky with sound quality. EQ settings from the player are still quite noticeable on the headset, and sound good. Volume on the device is enough and the opamp seems clean without adding too much of its own signature. It has a good quality sound. There is no EQ settings on the device itself, one thing i was disappointed with at first, but upon more listening i am glad they didnt put in some horrid preset EQs and mess up the sound. It is flat, detailed, with enough bass if the track has it. And like i said, using the app on your phone to change the sound signature works well and translates well to the headset. The included earbuds are actually much better than i expected. I planned to just plug in my Audio-Technica ckM50's or UE TripleFi10's upon the first listen, but i havn't. Not to say they are quite up to the specs as the higher-end earphones, but they are VERY GOOD for included earbuds. The ribbon-like wire does not tangle much, i've found the short length to be just about right to use with the clipped-on headset. Not sure why the length of the cable is so much between the L/R sides though, maybe for a Sasquatch head? There is some microphonics in the cord, but not terribly so, especially if you route the wire behind your head and dont move that much. Not sure about excercising though. The earbuds fit my ear perfectly, they are VERY noise-suppressant in the canal, and are rather comfortable. The buds are pretty small and fit well into the ear. I can even lie on my side without it bothering me much. The sound is quite detailed, a bit warm, with good response from low to high, with enough sparkle and air at the top end and deep pleasant bass on the low end. Not too boomy (a good thing) but tight and controlled. I have heard a bit of break-up with bass at some higher volumes though. It doesnt rival the UEtf10's bass, but it is really good and has a pleasant flatness that crosses the whole range well, into the midrange with enough warmth for vocals without a noticeable coloration of sound. I'm really enjoying listening to them, for the SQ and comfortable fit.You can take and make calls from the headset. It stores numbers dialed and missed from the phone. There are more feature i have yet to use such as the TextToSpeech. I will certainly try to update my review as i use the product more, or if problems or concerns arise, but so far i am EXTREMELY HAPPY with my purchase. I am now able to use my phone with the basic functions while leaving the phone in my pocket or camera bag, or nearby, without ever touching it. It's a major upgrade from the MW600. And yes, the device is wider than the old MW600, but thinner, and the clip is much wider and beefier. Lets just hope they made it more durable as well!***EDIT 7-17-12***(Downgraded from 5 to 3 stars)Upon using the device more myself, and talking to others in forums, issues with the device are becoming well known. Should have waited to post my initial review, but i will add to it now, as i have waited for Sony to reply or fix the problem and they have not:There is a buggy problem with the SD card file architecture. You cannot use any card above 2gb and have it work properly. It will not recognize/display/play many of the files, also not sure of what file types are actually supported. This is a simple problem that should have been worked out before the product was released, but wasn't. It ruins an otherwise nice product. The quality of the audio is very good for Bluetooth, i think much better than the MW600's, which isn't bad but has some pumped-up mid-bass, and i think a scratchiness and more sibilance. The MW1 has cleaner, flatter, more natural frequency response, with deep bass IF the source has it. The RANGE however, is slightly LESS than the MW600 in my real-world tests with both units. Not by much, but the newer unit will lose the signal a little closer to the TX device, and it will also beep annoyingly to tell you it's lost signal, which is just horrid when you're trying to listen to music. I'd rather just have some break-up of the transmission than be TOLD by a noise that there is a signal loss. Ridiculous! With more use and testing, i've found that though the included earphones sound pretty good, they are nowhere near the SQ of my UE TripleFi10's or other higher-end IEM's. Just don't A-B them side-by-side, or you'll really notice how inferior they are. The MW1's earphones are small and (to my ears at least)comfortable though. With headphones i've used with the MW1, the V-Moda M80's sound great, and are a very good pairing! Bigger pro headsets can sound thin, which is to be expected as they need more power to play well. With a new update from PowerAmp, artists and song titles are now displayed on the MW1. Music played from my android phone using PowerAmp sounds great. Volume and EQ settings can be tweaked through the app and phone. You can still use the volume on the MW1 too, of course. For BT music with a good phone/app, the device is working as hoped, and with that aspect i am very happy. As a stand-alone music (MP3) player, the card access/file problems are frustrating. For this price, it should work as Sony claims it does. This SHOULD be an easy fix with a firmware upgrade, and HOPEFULLY that will happen soon. But until then, i would recommend to STAY AWAY from this product if you want to use the device as a stand-alone player. Otherwise Sony should refund us all for part of the price of the functions that do not work as claimed. Or they should take care of their customers and upgrade the firmware ASAP. Or just put out a product that works right to begin with.I will update my review when/if Sony upgrades the firmware and fixes the issues with this device.***UPDATE 7-22-12***(Now downgraded from 3 to 1 star)The frustration grows and grows. Still no help from Sony.I have tried multiple times to get the files uploaded on a 16gb card, even re-formatting to a fresh card and using Sony's MediaGo software, as recommended. Seems to work, but then still only some of the files will play. End up with one or two songs from each album/artist. Does not work correctly even making your own playlist. The ShuffleALL function in particular does not work correctly, which is how i would (WANT to) use this device 99% of the time. So, in reality, you end up with hundreds of albums with only a song or two showing up, which when they have stopped playing, you have to back-track thru the menu to get to play another ONE album/track. Utterly ridiculous! My FIRST GENERATION Archos hard-drive-based MP3 player worked way better than this, many years ago before even ipod existed, raising the standard much higher for menu-based digital file music players. As a stand-alone player, this is just utterly USELESS. Sony, i want HALF of my money back, cause only half of the functions work as stated.Yes, the BT works pretty decent, but for the price of this, you are paying for all the other functions that dont work. I wanted to have a small stand-alone player to play music while mowing lawn, working out, etc., when you do not want your phone tethered to it. You can get other stereo BT devices, including Sony's own quite old MW600, for a MUCH LOWER PRICE. As i stated, you are PAYING for ALL these features, and if only part of them work, you should get your money back, or don't even consider purchasing this item until (or IF) Sony decides to fix the bugs!Another observation: the battery life on this model is actually less than my now-years-old-many-times-recharged MW600 model. Hmmmph.YET ANOTHER UPDATE 7-24-2012 (Can i pleeeease take away the one star, Amazon?)Now i can't even get the BT functions to work with the phone pairing...making/receiving calls!Does ANYTHING work right on this device after a while? Sony, give us at least half of our money back UNTIL you fix the bugs, and STOP SELLING IT until you do!Anyone that is considering purchase of this item, please take heed and DO NOT, until (or IF) the firmware is fixed making the device function as claimed. Don't be treated like a lab rat like the rest of us who paid good money for it.***UPDATE 10-18-2012***The update we have all been waiting for!Sony has just released a new update (v. 0.1.C.0.3) which addresses most of the horrid issues with the Sony MW1, including the file structure of music on the card, limited card size, etc. After the long process of downloading Sony's "Update Service" software [...] to my desktop, installing it, then connecting my device and installing the new firmware, then letting the device recognize the files (a nearly 45-minute process for me, depending on your files i presume), i am now able to actually play and listen to files on the mSD card in the device as a stand-alone player. Finally. The way it was supposed to work out of the box. Very glad that Sony decided to even bother to fix it, but it has taken much too long, and the device should have NEVER been released in the state it was.And hopefully Sony will be shipping the newly-manufactured devices with updated firmware to begin with.So if you already have the device, UPDATE to the new firmware and enjoy it, as i hope to do now as well! ;)If not, consider everything and decide for yourself. As the product coninues to function as it should (have), i will now consider it as a recommendation. I am now ammending my stars back to 3.****UPDATE 10-24-2012****Unfortunately, the new firmware update is STILL BUGGY!After my initial installation and waiting for the device to initialize, it seemed to work rather well. It could see all of the MP3 files with many various artist folders, and play every track in a folder. It made me very happy, at least for a day. That is until the next time i turned on the device after a day or two. Upon pushing the on button, two arrows loop around in a circle to tell you to wait. You wait. And wait more...You could wait as long as a half hour in fact, while the device once again finds/initializes the files on your card. And guess what...this now happens EVERY SINGLE TIME you turn the device on and off.WOW, the firmware engineers at Sony actually keep making the device even worse with every horrid attempt at rectifying their release of this dismal product!!!I am so sorry i said anything kind about this product once again. Sony just cannot get it right. And even if they finally do, i could never recommend this product again, for any reason. It should have never been released and everyone that bought it should get their money back. Period.I seriously doubt that i will ever update this product review again, even if a future update does finally get it to work as it should. You should seriously read through all of my review and consider all of the frustration i have had with this product. I've wasted a lot of my time trying to be honest and fair with this product, only to be let down repeatedly by it and the company that released it prematurely. My only remaining advice is if you decide you still want this device, that you to buy it from a reputable company, such as Amazon, where returning it is without hassle for a refund. I will no longer waste any of my time with it.

By Al
I rate it 2 stars because I found it annoying having to navigate the menus and stuff all the time. If they update the firmware and fix a few annoyances, I will give it a 4. I want to turn it on and play my media on my phone, but the Smart Wireless Pro makes you do some work every time. If you want a good bluetooth device to listen to music, and streaming iheartradio and stuff like that get the Sony mw600. It sounds better and it's much easier to use. All you have to do is turn it on and adjust the volume. The smart wireless pro is not very smart at all. The good news is that the firmware can be updated and hopefully they will fix it so it's not such a pain to use. It's a pretty high tech little device and there are apps you can use to add more functionality. The whole idea of it sounds pretty good, but I waste way too much time fiddling with the darn just to get it to work. Maybe different phones and different versions of android work differently, but these are my experiences with a Motorola Photon 4g.I had a few annoying problems with the Smart Wireless Pro. When I listen to something on my phone and someone calls me, I can answer and talk to them fine. But when I end the call it doesn't switch back to whatever I was listening to. So I have to push the select button, and push the right arrow to highlight my phone, and push select again to connect to my phone media. When I am at work mowing grass (noisy), I listen to sports talk on iheartradio pretty much all day long. I found that the volume is not quite loud enough even with some excellent noise isolating headphones (ue700). Music plays loud enough but some talk stations are not. Basically, I want more volume, or I want the volume to work separately like on the mw600. The volume on the smart wireless pro can only be adjusted on the device itself. The phone volume does nothing.Another annoying thing is that the smart wireless pro forgets things. If I turn off bluetooth, then turn it back on later, I have to navigate again to play media from my phone. Why doesn't it just remember what media I was listening to last time? The mw600 does remember and it's not even "smart". If you turn the power off, it even forgets what FM station you had it tuned to.

Bought this to replace a MW600 with a broken clip. Great range. Great battery life. Crystal clear display. Box comes with loads of accessories to help increase the value. Easy to set-up and use. They really have learned from the mistakes on the MW600 (which was the benchmark BT headset for music) - that is the charging port is hard to let moisture in, the volume control is now a rocker switch and not the touch sensitive rubbish and the clip looks to be indestructable. Don't bother buying a larger capacity SD card for the unit, it's well documented that at the time of me writing this the units do not recognise SD cards of greater than 2GB. i have a full video review on you tube, just search for my name (zero2espect).i bought this to use as a stereo bluetooth headset to use while i work out in the gym and use by the pool. it does all of this excellent - hence the 4. if i was buying this to use a stand-alone music player or as an app device to use with my phone, it'd score only a 3 (e.g. it does the job ok).
